Project Details
BEAR completed a unique 5,225-SF interior renovation on the second floor of the “B” Wing in the Northwestern University Technological Institute building. Approximately 2,500-SF of the space was the renovation of an existing robotics and skin science dry lab. An additional 2,000-SF was the conversion of existing office space into a new Wet Lab, a Computational Lab and Maker Spaces as well as an Elastomer Processing Dry Lab. Lastly, the remaining office space was reconfigured into new office space and a circulation space that leads to the elevator and egress stairs. Lab functions performed in the Wet Lab include tissue culture, microscopy and chemical processes. Functions in the Dry Lab include 3D printing, computation and the design and fabrication of small robots. Between these two lab spaces, students enjoy creating new kinds of simulations, robots and AI with the ultimate goal of understanding how animals evolve, grow, move, sense and think as well as studying human-robot interaction through the focus of improving haptic (touch) interface, remote manipulation and advanced prosthetics.
